Darren
Sproles
Darren was born June 20, 1983 in Waterloo, Iowa. He later moved to Kansas where
he began playing football at age 8. For two consecutive years he was an
All-Sunflower nominee, All Metro Honoree and an All-State selection. As a
Senior in high school, he was named Kansas Hall of Fame Player of the Year and
the USA Today Kansas Player of the Year. In high school, he rushed for 5,230
yards, averaging nearly 8.4 yards per carry and 79 touchdowns. He attended
Kansas State in 2001 on a full-ride football scholarship, where he set 23
school records. He finished 11th on the all-time college rushing yards list,
with the 6th most all-purpose yards in NCAA history. In 2003 he led Kansas
State to its first Big 12 Conference Championship. In April 2004, Darren's
mother Annette died at age 41 after a five-year battle with cancer. Honoring a
commitment that he'd made to his mother, Darren bypassed early entrance to the
NFL draft and returned to Kansas State in 2004 to complete his education and
earn his college degree. In May 2005, Darren graduated with his Bachelor of
Science Degree in Criminal Justice. That year he finished 5th in the Heisman
Trophy Voting. Known as the "Lightning Bug" for his speed and agility, Darren
Sproles was drafted in the fourth round by the San Diego Chargers in 2005. He
has led the team as a punt and kickoff returner, and 3rd down running back,
setting many personal and team records throughout his NFL career.
Michel
Sproles
Michel Sproles was born November 29, 1983 in Harbor City, California. Raised in
Los Angeles, Michel was a student-athlete and began running when she was only 7
years old for a local team, the Los Angeles Jets. While starting her running
career under Coach Booker Woods, he instilled in her structure and disciplines
both on and off the field. This would later carry her throughout life's many
obstacles. As a young kid she traveled across the United States competing in
National and Junior Olympic track meets. She carried this passion for running
through high school and in 1998 at J.W. North High she became the Ivy League
Champion in the 400 meters as a freshman, and a Varsity two-year letter winner
in track and field by her sophomore season. After her sophomore year in high
school Michel transferred to Long Beach Poly High and continued her academic
and athletic journey as a Jackrabbit, and among many team and personal
accomplishments, her team was crowned CIF Division 1 Champions and State
champions in her senior year. Michel also had a desire to serve others, which
she accomplished as a tutor for elementary school children and through her help
with the L.A. Jets Track Club. Continuing to realize her athletic dreams,
Michel received a full ride scholarship for Track and Field to the University
of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) where she majored in Communications (Journalism).
After graduation in 2005, she went on to teach 7th grade History at an at-risk
school in Nevada.
